The length of therapy depends on the client’s difficulties and the goals established at the outset of therapy. I do see some long-term clients (6 months to a year), but generally, most clients I work with are seen anywhere from 3 to 12 sessions. For couples, it typically takes 6-12 sessions to integrate changes that a couple wants to make.
I use a family-centered approach to therapy, and I also utilize family of origin theory. With individuals, I use a combination of both psychodynamic and cognitive approaches. The type of approach is, in part, dependent upon the types of problems presented by the client. I then tailor my approach to what may work best for that person. The family of origin work is often used in working with couples, families, and individuals.
