My practice is comprised mostly of couples and families, though I do work with individual adults and children. Most of the children I see are 6 years of age and older, and I typically work with them in the context of family therapy. I also enjoy working with adolescents, including difficult-to-treat adolescents who are counseled within the context of family therapy. My practice encompasses a wide array of common problem areas such as relationship issues, anxiety, depression, grief, ADHD, child behavioral problems, victims of abuse, trauma, gay and lesbian issues, and interpersonal problems related to work. I also specialize in working with families that are going through difficult transitions such as divorce, remarriage, or loss of a loved one. Additionally, I am a qualified Substance Abuse Professional and primarily conduct evaluations for employees that work for companies who are under DOT guidelines.
The length of therapy depends on the client’s difficulties and the goals established at the outset of therapy. I do see some long-term clients (6 months to a year), but generally, most clients I work with are seen anywhere from 3 to 12 sessions. For couples, it typically takes 6-12 sessions to integrate changes that a couple wants to make.
I use a family-centered approach to therapy, and I also utilize family of origin theory. With individuals, I use a combination of both psychodynamic and cognitive approaches. The type of approach is, in part, dependent upon the types of problems presented by the client. I then tailor my approach to what may work best for that person. The family of origin work is often used in working with couples, families, and individuals.
